You Were Never Lovelier (1942)

Both Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth are consummate performers, their filmographies attest to that. In the interlinking narrative moments of You Were Never Lovelier however it is at times hard to tell. The dances between Hayworth and Astaire are by far the highlights of the film, and whilst watching the purely narrative moments I found my concentration lacking and my mind wondering. The acting wasn’t brilliant and the chemistry somewhat missing. I wanted to avoid the clichéd comparison with the Astaire-Rogers chemistry but I have found it impossible. Though the narrative in the Astaire-Rogers films are of secondary concern, they are still engaging, due in large part to the chemistry between the pair rather than the story or scripts. The limp narrative of You Were Never Lovelier notwithstanding, it is a great film to watch purely for those, sadly all too brief, dances between Hayworth and Astaire.
